John Galliano is charged with plagiarism
26 April 2007One more sound scandal has shaken the haute couture world. The French court has sentenced the famous designer John Galliano to 200 000 euros payment to photographer William Klein for illegal use of his works in the advertising campaign. The well-known photographer has outright become angry, when he occasionally saw his works -popular pictures with the image of the street stages, partially painted by paints- in British, French and Russian Elle and Vogue magazines there were. The photos were published without Klein’s permission.
79-year-old American photographer William Klein, who is now living in Paris, was simply in fury, when he has casually learned, that his works have been used by the haute couture guru by John Galliano in the advertising campaign without author’s permission. On March, 28th, Parisian Supreme Court has recognized, that Klein’s techniques is his unique creative manner, which has appeared more ten years ago, and it was agreed, that Galliano has broken Klein’s intellectual property rights.
The designer is charged to pay 150 000 euros for not authorized use of intellectual property masterpieces and 5000 euros more for poor-quality use of photos’ reproductions, that has unfavorably affected Klein’s reputation. The maestro of photo has told that he has been very offended, when he has learned about all this and he regards this as the impact on inviolability of his works.
Galliano doesn’t agree with Court’s opinion. The designer has declared that he has been simply inspired Klein’s by works and use of works in advertising, in his opinion can’t be named plagiarism. In the nearest future Galliano is going to appeal against the judgment. Nevertheless scandal has dropped a shadow not only on Galliano, but also on fashionable Christian Dior house as Galliano has been working there as the main designer since 1996. However Dior’s agents have hastened to emphasize, that the House and actually John Galliano mark are the independent financial companies.
